"A romance that treats hard choices and hard history with unusual directness."
Lily Bloom opens a flower shop in Boston and begins a relationship with neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid, whose intensity has a volatile edge. When her first love, Atlas, reappears, the story braids her present with the childhood she spent watching her mother absorb her father's violence.
Hoover's present-tense prose is compulsively readable, and the book's willingness to connect a love story to the reality of domestic abuse gives it real weight. The diary entries with Atlas are affecting. Where it strains: the resolution wraps up systemic harm a little too neatly, and the epilogue softens consequences faster than the preceding four hundred pages earn.
Olivia Song narrates the English audiobook, which runs 11 hours 18 minutes. This is an editorial assessment of the novel, not a review of that performance. Choose it for an emotionally direct romance with serious subject matter, and check the content warnings first.
