"Four retirement-village sleuths meet weekly for cold cases — until a fresh one arrives at their door."
In the upscale retirement village of Coopers Chase, Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim, and Ron gather every Thursday to discuss unsolved murders. When a builder connected to the village's land deal turns up dead, the club gets its first live case — along with a smuggler's cache, two rival gangs, and a patient DCI who knows when to look away.
The pleasure here is voice: Osman's warm, wisecracking narration treats elderly characters as fully armed with experience rather than props. Joyce's diary chapters are the standout. The plot is deliberately episodic and trades tension for charm; readers who want their mysteries grim or airtight should adjust expectations, but the fair-play bones are genuinely there.
Lesley Manville narrates the English audiobook, which runs 12 hours 26 minutes. This is an editorial assessment of the novel, not a review of that performance. An ideal pick for listeners who like their crime cozy, clever, and funny.
